The Key to Powerful Influence
How Your Coherence Can Make Or Break You
Have you ever been curious about what makes a great leader attract abject loyalty? Or maybe you’ve wondered how certain speakers fill seats consistently, or how some coaches can truly transform their clients?
The combined elements of “influence” and “coherence” create an undeniable elixir that bears examination.
“Influence” is having the power or capacity to cause an effect in indirect or intangible ways, with the added ingredient of producing an effect without apparent exertion of force or direct exercise of command. Who among us does not wish for the capacity to effect change, without hitting others over the head with our ideas, strategies, and schemes?
I invite you, at this point, to imagine this soft but powerful ability that makes people look differently at you.
It is the application of coherence that will set you apart from the crowd. Some reach the multitudes, some help many, and some truly affect a lasting and powerful transformation in those with whom they interact. What I am referring to is the power to create change, on steroids.
“Coherence” is the state where your heart, mind, emotions, and physical systems are in cooperative, harmonious alignment. This especially occurs when you are resonating in the energy field of care, kindness, genuine listening, and cooperation.
Your ability to cultivate this alignment directly affects outcomes all around you, and it is this factor that deeply touches another. The interaction between two human beings is a sophisticated dance that involves many subtle factors.
Most people tend to think of communication solely in terms of overt signals expressed through facial movements, voice qualities, gestures, and body movements. However, evidence now supports the perspective that a subtle, yet influential electromagnetic or "energetic" communication system operates just below your conscious level of awareness.
Maybe you have had the experience of meeting a new person, and before they opened their mouth to speak – you had a feeling about them? Trust that – your heart never lies.
The ability to sense what other people are feeling is an important factor in allowing you to connect or communicate effectively with them. The smoothness or flow in any social interaction depends to a great extent on the establishment of spontaneous entrainment or linkage between you and someone else.
When you are engaged in deep conversation, you begin to fall into a subtle reflection of the other, matching their movements and postures, vocal pitch, speaking rates, and length of pauses between responses. Important aspects of your physiology and theirs can become linked and synchronized.
This is called cardio electromagnetic communication.
The heart is the most powerful source of electromagnetic energy in your body – its electrical field is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the electrical activity generated by your brain. This field, measured in the form of an electrocardiogram (ECG), can be detected anywhere on the surface of your body.
In addition, the magnetic field produced by your heart is more than 100 times greater in strength than the field generated by your brain. It can be detected up to 3 feet away from your body, in all directions, using SQUID-based magnetometers. (Other research has reported measuring the heart’s magnetic field at 22 feet in all directions).
There is a direct relationship between your heart-rhythm patterns and the information encoded in the magnetic field radiated by your heart. More particularly, information about your emotional state is encoded in your heart field and is communicated throughout the body and into the external environment.
How you have tuned your signature frequency or personal energy produces a tangible effect on everyone and everything around you. This is the social aspect of coherence, and the source of your ability to greatly enhance another’s experience of you and your message, for the better, or well, not.
Social coherence is reflected as a stable, harmonious alignment of relationships that allows for the efficient flow and utilization of energy and communication required for optimal collective cohesion and action. It brings powerful benefits to relationships, such as families, social groups, teams, and larger organizations.
